The Heppelwhite Card Table and Birdseye Card Table.
It didn't take long upon their arrival in America for the designs of these beautiful pieces to receive great notice and to begin their change to the American way. Today it is increasingly difficult to obtain the single boards for the constructional the folding tops on which these designs are partially based. But this must most certainly be done an can be done with the necessary discerning effort. With the top folded against a wall, it is like a picture of beautifully exhibited grain and color.
And now for the heavily detailed base o
f the Hepplewhite Card Table. All of the apron parts must be from the same piece of solid mahogany, as is true for all four legs. The oval is of satinwood, as are the oblongs of the legs. I choose the beeswing variety for its vibrancy of lively grain. The inlay outlines of each piece are to draw contrast and to accentuate color. The very thin handlayed holly on the legs, is of course for design, but notice also how the give the legs their appearance of slender quality.
No less of design, and distinctly American is our Birdseye Card Table. All parts are carefully matched and all detail of hand inlay is purposefully effective. The hand rubbed Birdseye figure seem to move as you cross the room. Card tables show their own special presence in so many ways. They seem to fit almost anywhere. These are but two pieces from my collection of favorites, but all pieces are made to the same standards of quality and all are made to be enjoyed.
